Khon Kaen Shopping

There are souvenir shops in Thanon Na Muang and Thanon Klang Muang. Opposite the Kosa Hotel there is a small handicrafts shop selling wood, textile and silk products. The night street markets are always great places to pick up good local items and KK is no exception.

Specialties of the region are:

Silk: Very much a major product of Khon Kaen, so there are lots of shops, stalls and specialist stores selling silk. The textiles can be bought as unmade pieces or made into clothes from a tailor. Some visitors book their flights and holidays to Thailand especially to stock up on the wonderful silk and enjoy the services of the many fabulously skilled tailors available. Tourists will be spoilt for choice when it comes to the silks an textiles on sale! It is often hard to decide what to pick with such a wide-ranging choice.

Ceramics: The region is rich in artifacts found in the many of the local archaelogical sites. Thai pottery, along with items with a Khmer influence are available at the shops in Khon Kaen. Tours can be arranged to go to see local craftsmen working on their products.

Basketry: Like pottery, there is a distinctive style to the Isaan products. Sticky Rice baskets can make good waste paper bins and will cost a fraction of anything bought outside Thailand.

Other crafts include cotton and silverware.

Another good place to buy many items is the North Eastern Handicrafts Promotion Centre, 12kms out of town on route 2 going north.
